History: wiki herePersonality: At first blush, trying to summarize Natasha's personality is difficult. She's a spy. She tailors her personality based on whoever she's with and whatever she's doing. Even Steve remarked on it and she asks him "Who do you want me to be?" When told it's a bad way to live, she says "It's a good way not to die." Her fluid personality is a reflection of her training and a defense mechanism. It also explains her constantly changing style and hair. It's how she's protected herself all her life, is it any wonder it's a hard habit to break.
Historically, she's been slow to trust and quick to judge. She keeps people at arms length with charm and humor. They might think they're getting through her defenses, but in reality they've barely even found the outer wall. She's got layers upon layers and she can count on two hands the people she's let get close enough to see her inner layers. She found a family in the Avengers. Family is something she never knew. She always thought that was a hindrance. She even resisted getting too close to the other Avengers for a while. The exception to all of this is Clint, but he earned his place a long time before the Avengers. Steve wore her down and showed her that trusting people isn't so bad. From the moment he saved her life, things began to change for her. She started showing her emotions more and letting the Avengers in.
All those walls began breaking down after the Snap, however. The years were rough on her and she let herself slip, revealing a tired vulnerability to the remaining Avengers. It was difficult to run things on her own. It was a position she neither asked for nor wanted, but there was no one else to take up the mantle... At least, no one else who cared to. The Avengers were her family and she couldn't abandon them. She wouldn't describe herself as loyal, especially considering how many times she's changed sides and fought friends in her life. Like it or not, though, she is. She just prioritizes her loyalty. Loyalty to friends and family, then loyalty to organizations (I.e. Avengers), then loyalty to country... Conditionally. She picks her sides very carefully, and isn't afraid to change sides if she feels the side she's chosen is wrong.
Whether she's being "tortured" by a terrorist, in a firefight, or just chatting with her friends, Natasha leans on humor. She's snarky and sarcastic and uses humor to disarm people, diffuse a situation, or get the upper hand. It makes her appear casual and unaffected by dangerous situations, which can throw people off, but it works in her favor. It's definitely showed up more since she's been with the Avengers. It's a nice change from the super serious KGB Agent, assassin, or SHIELD Agent. If you don't love what you do, right?
No matter what she does, she does it with conviction. She doesn't make decisions lightly. She may regret those decisions, but she's not going to risk anything going wrong because she isn't sure about what she's doing. She weighs all the options and comes to the most logical choice. Her confidence, loyalty, and love of her friends is what drove her to sacrifice herself. She had her Avengers family, but Clint had a wife and kids to go back to. One of them had to die and it had to be her. It was the logical choice.
Abilities: Natasha has a very specific set of skills.
She's a super spy. She doesn't officially have super powers, but she's been trained in such a way that she very well could be. I.e. She grabbed hold of a chitauri ship mid-flight and was able to climb on instead of her arm getting ripped off. She's super fast, crazy good at fighting, and an expert marks-person. She's also a skilled hacker and interrogator. Generally, she's the spy James Bond wishes he could be.
